Amodei Calls to Slow Frontier AI as Anthropic Opens Doors to Third-Party Evaluators
Dr_Atoosa · x · 2026-09-12
Dario Amodei published a new essay, "We Must Pace the Frontier," arguing the AI industry should slow down and laying out a three-part plan. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first step: granting third-party evaluators permanent, employee-level access to its systems to verify safety measures, report incidents, and assess alignment during training.
In a quoted comment, safety researcher ghadfield welcomed the unilateral commitment but stressed that it makes it even more critical to build an independent verification sector, establish government oversight frameworks like California's new law and the proposed FRONTIER Act, and ensure evaluators remain accountable to the public rather than becoming part of the corporate 'team'.
