Terence Tao: Turning Pure Math Into a Hobby Would Mean the End of Pure Math

His core question: even if AI could, who would ask it to, and who could understand the results without people willing to invest years in deep fundamental ideas? Making pure math a hobby would in practice end pure math—and deep human understanding of basic mathematical concepts. "Whether this is something we want is something we'll have to decide together."
