IEEE Spectrum publishes a long-form piece on Lotfi Zadeh and the birth of fuzzy logic. The UC Berkeley professor introduced fuzzy set theory in 1965, replacing binary true/false logic with degrees of membership. Ridiculed by mainstream researchers at the time, the idea later found its way into control systems everywhere, from home appliances to subway brakes.
