Dario Amodei Calls on AI Industry to Slow Down, Anthropic Pledges Permanent Third-Party Access
DarioAmodei · x · 2026-09-12
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a new essay, "We Must Pace the Frontier," arguing the AI industry should deliberately slow down frontier development, backed by a three-part plan. He frames AI's potential — curing most major diseases within 5-10 years, accelerating growth — against serious risks of loss of control, cyberattack/bioterrorism misuse, and economic disruption, all amplified by a commercial race to the bottom.
As its first unilateral commitment, Anthropic will grant third-party evaluators permanent, employee-level access to its systems so they can verify safety measures, report incidents, and assess model alignment during training.
