Kai-Fu Lee: AI task capacity grew 10x in a year, China-US model gap now ~6 months

In a Bloomberg Podcast interview, Sinovation Ventures' Kai-Fu Lee argues the world underestimates two things: AI's pace of progress and its organizational impact.
- AI can now handle tasks taking 40 minutes of human time, up from 4 minutes a year ago — a potential 10x increase in replaceable work. Adoption may outpace steam, the internet, and Moore's Law. Successful companies in five years will need "DRIs" (Directly Responsible Individuals) who define problems, orchestrate AI armies, and own accountability.
- On China vs. the US: the gap between top Chinese and frontier US models has shrunk from years to roughly 6 months. Chinese labs pursue an open-source "Android path" trading revenue for market share, while OpenAI/Anthropic are the "iPhone," monetizing via mature enterprise software. Export controls underestimated Chinese engineers' resilience — compensating limited GPU access with up to 10x engineering effort, plus a "study group" dynamic of open papers, shared models, and talent flow (DeepSeek citing Kimi and vice versa).
- On jobs: AI will create new industries and wealth, but displaced workers won't automatically transition; retraining and rethinking work's role in human value are urgent. Lee himself now uses AI in every meeting — for management analysis, risk detection, and even as his CEO coach.
