Anthropic Institute scenarios: AI could add 8.6% to US GDP by 2030, with 17.9% cognitive unemployment in extreme path

Anthropic Institute Working Paper 2026-02, "Economic Scenarios for Transformative AI" by Anton Korinek, Charles I. Jones, Szymon Sacher, Tess Cotter and Peter McCrory, models how AI could reshape US output and jobs by 2030, paired with a survey of 10,980 US adults.
- Median scenario: GDP +8.6% vs a no-AI path by 2030; extreme path: +32.4% GDP but 17.9% cognitive unemployment
- The workforce is split into cognitive occupations (management, professional, sales, office) treatable as exposed, and construction/trades treated as unexposed through 2030
- Transmission: AI raises cognitive output, pushes displaced workers into the second group, and raises returns on capital as machines replace wage labor
- Five inputs drive the paths, including knowledge-work coverage, firm adoption rates, and per-task speedup
- The authors note views are their own, not Anthropic's; an interactive explorer is live at anthropic.com/institute/econ-scenarios, covered by NPR
Survey medians sit on the middle path: a larger economy with fewer knowledge jobs — neither collapse nor business as usual.
