DSPy author: scaling bypasses solutions, never problem specification

lateinteraction · x · 2026-09-12

Omar Khattab (lateinteraction, DSPy creator) restates his core thesis: good AI software needs a crisp mental model of problems vs solutions. Assuming AI will write the problem specification for you leads to disappointment; overfitting brittle implementation choices to one LLM doesn't scale. Scale lets you bypass hand-crafted solutions but not careful problem definition — it just raises the abstraction level at which you define problems, which is DSPy's whole point.
