Ex-OpenAI staffer credits Sam Altman for OpenAI's free-speech culture
willdepue · x · 2026-09-12
Former OpenAI employee Will Depue muses that without strong individual leaders like Sam Altman or Elon Musk, AGI might have been announced via one Google I/O-style launch after another, with no communication and decided by committee. He argues Altman deserves great credit: OpenAI, for better or worse, is very defensive of employee free speech, Anthropic's culture is a follow-on to this, and X, GDM, and Meta rarely show similar openness.
