25 Fields Medalists warn of misalignment with AI companies; Gu Quanquan pushes back

Twenty-five Fields Medal winners published a joint declaration warning of a severe misalignment between AI companies and the mathematics community. UCLA professor Quanquan Gu pushed back, arguing that as mathematicians increasingly use AI themselves, a genuinely solved problem with a rigorous, independently verifiable proof shouldn't depend on whether the AI was operated by a mathematician, a hobbyist, a university, or an AI company.
