'I don't want to be a mathematician anymore': Chollet on AI crushing a generation

François Chollet says math students increasingly feel "I don't want to become a mathematician anymore," likening them to digital artists who came of age around 2022—possibly the last of their kind. AI may not functionally replace mathematicians or artists but could cause their near-extinction by crushing younger generations' spirits. Statistician Kareem Carr counters that scientific demand for math-trained people may rise: a division of labor where they run math-AI algorithms and help scientists interpret outputs seems better than scientists doing it alone.
