DNA synthesis screening is lax and voluntary; IFP maps how to secure the supply chain against AI-enabled evasion

IFP's new field guide by Janika Schmitt and Joshua Monrad argues cheap DNA synthesis is a critical biosecurity chokepoint: screening is lax and voluntary, and AI could likely get arbitrary DNA synthesized. The report lays out priority projects: affordable customer/order screening, standardized sequence screening, extending the perimeter to benchtop synthesizers, oligos and split-order detection, independent auditing bodies, and screening robust against AI-enabled evasion.
