24 Fields Medalists have co-signed a declaration, "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics," arguing that while LLMs can now solve major open problems, AI companies' push to use hard math as a benchmark harms both the science and the mathematical community. The signers say famous problems serve as lighthounds whose real value lies in the long communal process of digesting new ideas, and frame the misalignment as part of a broader issue affecting other scientific and creative professions — and society at large.
