'AI kills everyone' is overblown — totalitarian takeover and collapse are likelier

dbasch · x · 2026-09-12

dbasch pushes back on the AI-kills-everyone discourse: wiping out humanity "is a tall order" that takes more than intelligence. Far likelier bad outcomes get ignored — one nation wins the race and turns Earth totalitarian, someone kills millions with AI, or a runaway system triggers global economic collapse.

None of these exterminate humanity and none would be worse than WWII or the Black Death, he argues, but in hindsight they may look like 9/11: "we were too concerned with AI killing us all."
