AI Persistent Memory Is a State Management Problem, Not Just Retrieval
Raza2614 · reddit · 2026-09-12
A Reddit post argues AI persistent memory remains unsolved because it is fundamentally a state management problem: extracting facts from conversations, tracking importance, retrieving by semantic relevance and time, plus deduplication, contradiction handling, consolidation and decay. The critical bottleneck is deciding what enters context — requiring retrieval, re-ranking and context compression. Unlike RAG, which retrieves external information, a memory system must maintain an evolving persistent state outside the context window, something bigger context windows can't replace.
