UK thinktank proposes AV tax raising up to £46bn to offset robotaxi job losses and congestion

The Centre for British Progress argues that robotaxis arriving in London (Uber & Wayve launched driverless rides; Waymo is next) bring three problems: hundreds of thousands of taxi/private hire jobs at risk (417,000 drivers in England), increased congestion since marginal driving cost falls to zero (California Waymos spend half their time empty), and a looming fuel-duty revenue collapse (£27bn/year). The report proposes a small per-mile charge on AVs that could raise up to £46 billion for local infrastructure, public transport, and driver retraining — and urges the government to act before AVs become widespread.
