70+ UK lawmakers urge Burnham to back ban on artificial superintelligence after 10% extinction warning

More than 70 UK MPs and peers, including 15 former ministers and former civil service head Robin Butler, have written urging Andy Burnham to back a Commons bill prohibiting the creation of artificial superintelligence (ASI) and lead an international movement to stop it.

The campaign follows warnings from AI insiders: Anthropic senior employee Evan Hubinger put the odds of the technology wiping out humanity above 10%, and 28-year-old Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned claiming neither Anthropic nor OpenAI was acting responsibly. Backers cite expert estimates of roughly a 10% chance ASI could kill all humans within a decade.

The bill, tabled Tuesday, targets a not-yet-existent AI that would outcompete humans across most domains, highlighting Europe's split between safety-first governance and startup racing.
