Deng Yu, the 37-year-old winner of the 2026 Fields Medal, joked on social media that "if AI can solve all maths problems, I'll go home and write my yuri novel." He later clarified to SCMP that the statement was entirely in jest and he isn't writing one.
He added he doesn't believe AI can solve all mathematical problems, but acknowledged AI has created "an atmosphere of restlessness and impatience" in mathematical circles, predicting the situation will clarify once the wavefront passes in a year or two.
