banteg's snail project crowdsources AI agents to finish matching Snail Mail's 20 remaining functions

banteg · x · 2026-09-11

Developer banteg's open-source reverse-engineering project snail is reconstructing the original x86 code of the classic game Snail Mail. A previous call for the crimsonland project brought in a 20kb function-matching contribution; the new round lists 20 remaining challenges, from large gameplay functions (initializegameassetsandworld, updatesubgame) to a dozen path-builder routines and smaller helpers.

The repo ships C/C++ reconstructions, native decompile exports, investigation notes, and a reproducible VC6 matching workflow. Contributors are invited to point AI coding agents (astra/fable) at individual issues, with partial improvements welcome — a notable model of human-agent collaboration for binary matching.
