Sakana AI launches Fugu Max and Fugu Ultra v2 to push the cost-capability Pareto frontier
hardmaru · x · 2026-09-11
Sakana AI released two products built on the same orchestration architecture: Fugu Max, which orchestrates its largest pool of open and specialized models to date to deliver the best output at the lowest cost, and Fugu Ultra v2, which pushes peak performance on complex multi-step tasks without indispensable reliance on frontier models.
The thesis: the frontier that matters is two-dimensional — capability and cost. Deploying a multi-trillion-parameter model for a simple lookup is waste, not intelligence. The company says its April beta proved multi-agent orchestration works as a unified foundation model, and the June GA/Fugu Ultra v1 showed an orchestration layer can match closed frontier models on key tasks.
