Jon Finger: Capable stupidity worries me more than AI intelligence

mrjonfinger · x · 2026-09-11

Jon Finger argues the real risk isn't powerful AI but "very capable stupidity" — describing Astra as "a marmoset brain trained on all of human knowledge": capable yet cognitively narrow.

He notes humans are themselves narrow thinkers due to cognitive limits, with malice and apathy being ways to think less. The widespread fear of AI killing everyone in malice or apathy, he says, stems from misreading this novel moment of repeated, impressively capable stupidity as intelligence.
