Coinbase says top software engineer traits in the AI era are communication, flexibility, autodidacticism
kleffew94 · x · 2026-09-11
yugacohler of Coinbase Dev shared the three key attributes the company now looks for when hiring software engineers across teams, and they're not what you'd expect:
- Clear communication: excellent writing and speaking skills, because they dictate your ability to use AI productively — "writing is thinking."
- Flexibility: comfort rapidly context-switching across frontend, backend, distributed systems and SDKs; specialization is out.
- Autodidacticism: the ability to learn quickly on your own, "because everyone else can."
It's a telling signal of how AI coding tools are reshaping hiring criteria at major tech companies.
