Diyi Yang's team released a longitudinal follow-up study of Character.AI users (arXiv:2609.07243), tracking AI companionship and well-being over time.
- Sample: 1,182 participants at baseline, 439 re-surveyed after a mean 12-month follow-up in a two-wave design.
- Findings: Interaction intensity, companionship use, and self-disclosure show substantial continuity over time — higher baseline intensity predicts greater subsequent companionship use and self-disclosure.
- Core result: Sustained social engagement across these dimensions is consistently associated with lower well-being. The social displacement pathway holds: the negative links are mainly explained by reduced in-person human interaction.
- Implication: The authors argue AI companion design should account for displacement of human social interaction, not just optimize for immediate emotional value.
