Contrails expands AI contrail-mitigation partnership with Cathay Pacific to transpacific routes

The Contrails project is expanding its partnership with Cathay Pacific, its first Asian commercial airline partner, to test AI-powered contrail mitigation on ultra-long-haul and transpacific routes.

The system combines AI predictions, satellite imagery, and weather intelligence to spot cold, humid zones where warming contrails form. Pilots receive dynamic forecasts via Cathay's Electronic Flight Folder over in-flight Wi-Fi and make small, safe altitude adjustments.

An initial operational phase of 80+ flights achieved an estimated 40% reduction in contrail warming impact, with the Hong Kong–Singapore corridor accounting for over 50% of total reductions. The author frames it as one of the most immediately scalable, cost-effective climate solutions requiring no new propulsion infrastructure.
