James Villarrubia built NutPrint, a Claude Code tool that converts your AI sessions' water usage into almonds and shows it in the status bar (e.g., "Week: 2.4 gal = 150 almonds").
The rationale: AI's water use matters, but gallons are hard to visualize, and comparing to showers or drinking water is counterproductive. Almonds — roughly 16,000 L/kg globally, 3.2 gallons per almond in California — make a suitably absurd-yet-concrete baseline.
The post also offers perspective on other water hogs: almond milk (30 gal/carton), beef (4,000 gal/kg, about the same as almonds per kg), and fast-fashion jeans (1,000-2,000 gal/pair), poking fun at selectively blaming AI for water use.
