tcut: script terminal videos in TypeScript, render MP4/GIF and test your TUI in CI
samgoodwin89 · x · 2026-09-11
samgoodwin89 boosted tcut, an open-source tool by @amanvarshney01 that "writes" terminal videos as TypeScript scripts instead of screen recordings.
- Author a defineVideo script: run() types a command and waits for the prompt (no guessed sleeps), expect() asserts on the rendered screen, snapshot() exports a frame as PNG/SVG
- One recording renders to MP4, GIF, WebM, SVG, or HTML — identical pixels regardless of machine speed
- Use cases: agents (ChatGPT, Claude Desktop) can render terminal clips in chat; self-updating README GIFs; tcut test doubles as a TUI test in CI; the project's own demo is a build artifact composed with Remotion
