NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster says he and Anthropic researcher Levent Alpöge had worked on the same problem for about a year, and that OpenAI pushed him to remove Alpöge's name from its announcement after learning of their progress via a private call; OpenAI hasn't disputed the timeline in detail.
