'Legacy Infrastructure' Is Suddenly the Future: Why Enterprise AI Is Moving Back On-Prem

DavidLinthicum · x · 2026-09-11

DavidLinthicum mocks the 'AI will live in the public cloud forever' crowd: enterprises have budgets, compliance teams, sensitive data, latency requirements, security policies, and CFOs watching invoices — a cloud-only path doesn't work.

He argued years ago that enterprise AI had to move closer to the data — on-prem, private, hybrid, controlled, secured — and took heat for it ('nobody wants hardware', 'on-prem is dead').

Now AI agents run 24/7, generate massive compute workloads, and need access to sensitive data, making on-prem/hybrid the only affordable way to scale AI. 'Legacy infrastructure' has suddenly become the future.
