Ohio State MAE professor Hai-Jun Su took home three honors at ASME IDETC-CIE 2026: the Leonardo DaVinci Award, the Mechanism and Robotics Award, and the 2026 Mechanisms and Robotics Best Paper Award. His research uses AI and LLMs to solve engineering design and robot-motion problems, spanning kinematic synthesis, pseudo-rigid-body modeling, screw-theory design, spatial flexures, DNA origami, and soft robotics — enabling lighter, simpler mechanisms and safer collaborative robots. He spent this summer at ElorianAI exploring mechanical engineering plus VLM research.
