Rep. Ro Khanna Admits He Was Wrong to Oppose California's SB 1047 AI Liability Bill
ShakeelHashim · x · 2026-09-11
Rep. Ro Khanna publicly admitted that he, like many, dismissed AI safety warnings as science fiction — and that in retrospect he should have supported Scott Wiener's SB 1047, which would have established state-level AI liability. He says the bulk of the California delegation was mistaken in opposing the bill, noting this even though he endorsed Wiener's opponent Connie Chan for Congress.
Khanna now argues for both the federal AI safety agency he has outlined and a robust state approach plus mandatory insurance, urging fellow lawmakers to engage with the issue with the same transparency about past mistakes.
