PlanetScale announced Neki, its sharded Postgres offering, now available in platform preview.
- Built on eight years of running some of the world's largest sharded MySQL clusters, serving millions of queries per second for tier-0 workloads
- Targets the single-machine ceiling of Postgres: unvacuumable huge tables, multi-hour backups, connection limits, transaction wraparound
- Guiding principle is sticking to real Postgres rather than app-level sharding or "Postgres-compatible" distributed databases that hide shard keys and drop extensions
