Google AI Mode now cites 72% fewer sources for logged-out users, data shows

An analysis of weekly citation data from January through early September found Google AI Mode's average sources per answer for logged-out users collapsed from 15 on Aug 16 to just 4 by Sep 6.

- India: 20 → 5 (-76%)
- UK: 19 → 5 (-74%)
- US: 19 → 5 (-74%)
- South Korea: 13 → 4 (-71%)
- Germany: 15 → 4 (-71%)
- Spain: 13 → 4 (-70%)
- Japan: 10.7 → 3.6 (-67%)
The decline spans all tracked markets and the gap between markets is narrowing. A citation bug in AI Mode was already known from logged-in reports; the logged-out collapse is a sharper warning for publishers relying on AI search referrals.
