US and UK Lawmakers Push Bills to Ban Superintelligent AI Development
GenericNameRandomNum · reddit · 2026-09-10
Efforts to legislate against superintelligent AI are advancing on both sides of the Atlantic:
- US Senator Bernie Sanders announced plans to introduce the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, prohibiting development of smarter-than-human AI systems and temporarily pausing other advanced AI research until new safety rules are in place.
- UK lawmaker Alex Sobel introduced what he says is the first bill in any G7 parliament seeking to ban superintelligence, defining it as a system that could disempower state authorities and granting the state new powers to monitor and restrict potential precursors.
- Both bills also compel their governments to pursue a global treaty banning superintelligent AI worldwide. Andrea Miotti, founder of campaign group ControlAI, which drafted the UK bill and consulted on the US one, argues only international agreements can prevent development from simply shifting elsewhere.
