In a widely shared quote, journalist Virginia Postrel writes that "Anthropic is a bubble inside a bubble (tech culture) inside a bubble (San Francisco)." People she met were likelier to discuss Dyson spheres than near-term practical AI applications, and often couldn't articulate a positive case for building increasingly powerful AIs beyond the "Manhattan Project argument." She found that weird.
