West Bengal mulls opening 18 industrial parks for data centers as India capacity heads to 6 GW by 2029

West Bengal's government is considering allowing unused land in 18 industrial parks owned by WBIDC to host data centers, officials told the Economic Times, as Indian states race to capture a share of booming compute demand.
Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh currently hold 75% of India's data center capacity. National capacity is projected to nearly triple from 1.6 GW in mid-2026 to 6 GW by 2029, per JLL, prompting non-traditional states to court the industry.
