Medtronic Invests $700M in Chinese Surgical Robot Startup Cornerstone

Medtronic is investing about $700M in Hong Kong-based surgical robot startup Cornerstone Robotics in a strategic partnership to take its robots to more overseas markets.
Key points:
- Cornerstone, founded in 2019, runs a 30,000 m² manufacturing facility in China
- Its Sentire system (minimally invasive general, gynecologic, thoracic and urologic surgery) won Chinese approval in 2024, plus EU CE Mark and Singapore approval in May
- Medtronic will distribute Sentire alongside its Hugo system across 35+ markets, building a multi-port portfolio
- Global adoption of robot-assisted surgery is still in the single digits, leaving major room for growth
