Second Anthropic Pretraining Researcher Resigns; 1,386 Staff Sign Petition to Slow AI Development

Hilbert Spaess, who spent three years on pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic, announced his resignation from Anthropic, saying neither company is acting responsibly and they are "racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives."
- Jasmine Wang amplified the resignation, noting she and 1,385 others signed the Pacing the Frontier petition asking the US government to pace AI development
- She estimates signatories represent roughly 8-10% of all frontier lab employees
