Matt Wolfe set out to build an "AI Slop Detector" — paste a YouTube/TikTok/Instagram/X link and get a verdict on whether the video is AI-generated. The open-source project lives at github.com/mreflow/ai-slop-detector.
What looked like a simple build turned into days of debugging:
- Initial detection logic repeatedly failed; even Gemini got fooled by AI video
- He had to bolt on a third-party AI detection API, burning thousands of API operations
- Many results came back "inconclusive," and costs climbed fast
The tool eventually works — kind of. The experiment leaves him with a bigger question: if detecting AI video is this unreliable, how credible are claims that we've already reached AGI?
