Kelsey Piper observes that people at OpenAI and Anthropic tend to believe that recursively self-improving AI, if they get it right, will be the best thing ever — while it would be bad if a rival gets there first. This mindset makes them reluctant to stop, even as signs accumulate that nobody knows how to do it right.
