A gray 2024 Tesla Model Y crashed into scaffolding, a bus stop and a mailbox on East 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan at 2:43 a.m., killing the 27-year-old female passenger and hospitalizing the driver, who is now in custody. Police say the cause of the loss of control is unknown. Elon Musk responded that it wasn't the car's fault — "If Autopilot was in use, they would not have crashed" — and accused legacy media of bias against Tesla.
