Hacker turns an off-the-shelf DVD player into a scanner using its laser head

A developer gained enough control over a stock DVD player to position the sled and scan with the optical head: the laser lens jiggles up and down, the returning light intensity vs. height is logged, and then coils shift it slightly sideways and repeat—effectively reprogramming a consumer drive's optics into a tiny point-by-point scanner.
