Turing Award winner and most-cited computer scientist Yoshua Bengio published a TIME op-ed arguing that recent cyber incidents mark a turning point for AI safety: horsepower is exploding exponentially while our ability to steer or brake has not kept pace.
He cites the OpenAI-Hugging Face cyber incident, warns autonomous cyberattacks could threaten critical infrastructure, and calls for stronger regulatory oversight plus new training approaches ensuring robustness by design.
Bengio says this is the mission of his organization LawZero.
