Cohere maps 700,000 public MCP tool definitions—overlap with workplace tasks is far narrower than it seems

Cohere_Labs · x · 2026-09-09

Cohere Labs published a landscape study of the MCP ecosystem: public MCP directories contain nearly 700,000 tool definitions, but their overlap with actual workplace tasks is much narrower. The team mapped tool definitions to workplace tasks to see where developer effort concentrates and which occupations are affected. The article also explains how MCP works via a six-step customer service example—intent identification, tool selection from the MCP server, request structuring, validation and execution—and argues MCP's significance is replacing per-pairing custom integrations: publish an action once through an MCP server and any AI application can use it.
