Code Generation Is Solved, Software Engineering Isn't—Code Was Never the Bottleneck

The author argues AI code generation is rapidly becoming a solved problem: multi-stage Docker builds, Terraform modules, and quick parsing scripts all come out in seconds. If your job is translating a well-scoped Jira ticket into a Python function, yes, you should worry.

But the apocalyptic takes miss the point: code was never the bottleneck. Development has always had a mechanical layer—translating an already-understood solution into code—and that's exactly where AI excels. Software engineering, the messy sprawling ecosystem of requirements, architecture, tradeoffs and maintenance, is a different problem that remains far from solved.
