Tsinghua's open-source OpenMAIC has generated 1M+ AI courses, trains UNESCO educators in Paris

A joint Tsinghua education + CS team built OpenMAIC, a nonprofit open-source AI education product that was just invited by UNESCO to run a 90-minute hands-on training for educators in Paris.
How it works
- Generates full courses from scratch (e.g., "Python in 7 days"): AI schedules daily tasks, then produces slides, explanations and exercises per lesson, with whiteboard-assisted Q&A
- Accepts PPT imports, auto-adding voiceover and interactive elements
- Ships teaching Skills (Feynman method, spiral curriculum); teachers can distill their own design patterns into custom Skills
- Includes "cyber classmates" for discussion; Prof. Liu Zhiyuan notes students participate more freely with AI peers
Traction
- Piloted at Tsinghua since 2024, covering 13 departments and 50+ courses; flagship new-student course built on 15 years / 20k+ advising cases
- Open-sourced in March; supports local deployment with any LLM; 1M+ AI courses generated as of last month
