Nvidia's Jensen Huang: closed models are cheaper, open models give you control
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-09-09
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, on Bloomberg Podcasts, pushed back on the assumption that open models are cheaper:
- Closed models are cheaper: self-hosting open models means absorbing the cost and expertise of training, fine-tuning, maintenance, guardrails, evaluation, and safety — plus building the computers to host them. "There is nothing cheap about doing all of that yourself."
- The reason you need open models is control: adapting them for highly specialized use cases
- He says there's a lot of misunderstanding about open vs closed, and both deserve a place
