DeepSeek v4 Pro multiplies 128-digit numbers with no tools, burning 8M tokens
ctjlewis · x · 2026-09-09
Developer ctjlewis shared an experiment running for nearly 3 years: asking a model to multiply 128-digit by 128-digit numbers with no tools, purely via API. Logs show roughly 8 million tokens of carry operations; the raw log was hosted on GitHub (deleted after the 90-day retention window, but the author kept a copy). DeepSeek v4 Pro also did two 64-digit multiplications, though those weren't saved; the runs can be repeated anytime.
