Grok Bot product lead on the two early bets behind its viral success
lennysan · x · 2026-09-09
Grok Bot product lead Roman Ugarte shares the product's origin story for the first time: a tiny skunkworks team shipped from scratch, got the whole company hooked four weeks after the first line of code, and launched seven weeks in — with millions of Grok Bots already in use within a month.
He credits two non-obvious early decisions:
- Everything runs in the cloud: users never think about where workflows run, whether their computer needs to stay awake, or phone-to-desktop tethering. The bot is a persistent colleague with its own computer, holding one state across every entry point.
- The bot gets its own machine: a separate runtime that handles tasks independently of the user's device.
The interview also covers why they built fresh instead of embedding in Cursor, and lessons from manually onboarding early users.
