OpenAI claims it "solved Navier-Stokes"; Pedro Domingos calls claim ignorant or dishonest

OpenAI research VP Mark Chen tweeted "We solved Navier-Stokes!", adding that many colleagues left their fields to work on AI because they believed it was the fastest path to solving their fields' grand challenges—and that seeing the first one fall felt surreal.
The claim immediately drew pushback: prominent academic Pedro Domingos countered that OpenAI did not "solve Navier-Stokes", calling the statement "ignorant or dishonest or both". The dispute over what was actually achieved—and whether the framing is exaggerated—is quickly becoming a flashpoint in the AI community.
