Grok Bot product lead reveals the two bets behind its explosive growth

In his first public telling of the story, Grok Bot product lead Roman Ugarte explains how the product went from first line of code to company-wide obsession in four weeks, launching three weeks later with millions of bots helping users within a month.
Two key early decisions:
- Everything runs in the cloud: bots can be kicked off from a phone and keep working while the user sleeps.
- Each bot gets its own computer: it can operate tools that have no API by using them like a human would.
The team also embraced "unshipping" — cutting internal model reasoning, memory traces, and developer-style observability tools before launch. Their mental model is a colleague: you wouldn't ask a teammate for second-by-second updates on every click. They also chose to build from scratch rather than inside Cursor, and learned heavily from manually onboarding early users.
