Sam Altman responds to Navier-Stokes drama: OpenAI offered to let rival team win the prize

Responding to accusations that OpenAI snatched the Navier-Stokes proof, Sam Altman says the team acted with integrity: OpenAI initially believed the other team had also solved the problem and proposed a joint release; upon learning they had only solved Euler, OpenAI offered to let them publish first, suggested they take the prize, and offered Tristan Buckmaster lead authorship on a rewrite. He says the same couldn't be offered to Levent Alpöge, an Anthropic employee unwilling to coordinate.
